Wildland residents focus on prevention

One year ago, on July 4, two workers on a ranch near Zaca Lake sparked the second largest wildfire in state history.

As the fire swept eastward, burning through over 240,000 acres, mostly in the Los Padres National Forest, it came perilously close to the wildland communities at the base of Figueroa Mountain, and also those around San Marcos Pass.

“From my house I could see 180 degrees of fire, it looked like the surface of the sun,” said Mike Williams, whose home was seven miles from the fire line at one point.

CITIZEN COMMENTARY

America, the land of choices

To the writer of “Stop handouts to undeserving”:

First, Mexico is not calling for the “Great American Boycott” or “Nothing Gringo” on May 1. It's for the legal - or not - immigrants who would like to participate. It would be a very ignorant and foolish idea to close government, medical, transportation offices, etc. Why should we citizens need to be punished on that day, as many will be needing access to those facilities? Everybody has the freedom to make the choice to participate or not. That's what's so great about this country!

Lindsey Milner earned a spot in the Nationals by wining the championship in Girls Cutting. Jacob Pinheiro won the Boys Cutting.

Movie review: ‘The Happening’
Photo

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, “The Happening” is a tense and often gory thriller/fantasy that unfortunately lacks the originality and twists of his most ambitious and successful film, “The Sixth Sense.” Presenting an underlying (although thinly drawn) “message” about protecting the environment, Shyamalan stumbles a bit with the goofy and ambiguous script that doesn’t offer much for the cast to work with and results in a number of overwrought performances.

When an unidentifiable “plague” infiltrates Central Park causing immediate disorientation and suicidal behavior, a Philadelphia science teacher, Elliot (Mark Wahlberg), agrees with his best friend and colleague, Julian (John Leguizamo), to gather their respective families and evacuate the Northeast.
