Girls face the LPL’s best early
By Kenny Cress/Sports Writer
Last season, the Santa Ynez girls basketball team improved under then first-year coach Cheyenne Dietrich, and made the playoffs.
This season, they suffered a big blow when scoring leader Hailey King tore an ACL ligament. However, Amanda Spence has done a nice job of picking up some of the slack as the 5-9 Pirates look for a return trip to the playoffs.
On Friday, the LPL’s toughest test comes to town. St. Joseph faces Santa Ynez in a game that will be webcast live on www.syvnews.com. Brad Memberto will be calling all the action. Gametime is set for 7:30 p.m.
So far, the Pirates are 5-9 this season.
King was averaging 14.3 points a game when she was hurt. Spence is averaging 12.6.
Annie Fredrickson averages 8.8 points a game. She leads the team in rebounding, at
8.3 per game.
Here’s a look at the Pirates’ Los Padres League competition:
St. Joseph
St. Joseph’s girls basketball team won its Los Padres League games by an average of 50 points last year.
Things don’t figure to get any easier for the Knights’ league opponents this year in the midst of St. Joseph’s defense of its 2009 CIF Southern Section Division IV-A championship.
CalHiPreps.com’s Girls Freshman Athlete of the Year, Aly Beebe, is back and she’s having a solid sophomore season. The 6-foot, 4-inch center is averaging 13 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game.
Guard Brianna Bognuda has sparked an improved outside shooting game. Forward Analise Riezebos missed all of the regular season last year with a knee injury. She’s back and averaging 14 points a game.
Cabrillo
When the Conquistadores (3-9) have made a play, freshman Tati Dunlap has often been the one to make it.
She averages 18.8 points a game. No one else on the roster averages more than 6.3.
Lompoc
Celina Calderon (7.6 points a game) and Tashara Pruett-gibbons (same average) lead the scoring for the 1-8 Braves.
Morro Bay
Megan Hansen, the runner-up in the Los Padres League singles tournament, leads the 5-8 Pirates girls basketball team in scoring at 12. 6 points a game. Hannah Gilbert averages 7.4 rebounds a game for Morro Bay. Aria Johnson averages 6.4.
Templeton
The Eagles were winless in league games last year. They’ll try for better things this season, and a lot of their hopes may ride with Carly O’Sullivan and Katie Koehler.
Santa Maria
The 2-10 Saints have a new coach, Courtney Calderon. They have a brand new starting five.
