Grider gives Dakar another go

Los Olivos’ Andy Grider is giving the world’s most publicized off-road endurance race another shot.

As of Tuesday, Grider — along with American rally car driver Robby Gordon — was 10th overall at the Dakar Rally. The two-week race across Argentina and Chile was set to finish with the final stage on Saturday.

The terrain is anything but kind. Mud, rocks and plenty of sand dunes included. But Grider is an accomplished off-road racer who teams up along NASCAR’s Gordon in SCORE events and placed highly at the 2009 Rally.

In this year’s event, Grider and Gordon did take a stage win, claiming the fourth stage. Driving a Hummer H3, they finished one second ahead of BMW’s Stephane Peterhansel, who claimed victory in the third stage.

The course was a 163-kilometer stage from Fiambala in northern Argentina to Copiapo in Chile.

This year’s 31st running of the event has been marred by a couple tragic events, including the death of a spectator during the first stage and KTM rider Luca Manca’s serious accident in the sixth.
