Santa Ynez’s Annie Fredrickson blocks a shot from St. Joseph’s Mecca Perkins during Los Padres League girls basketball at Santa Ynez High on Friday. St. Joseph took the win 73-31. //Bryan Walton/Staff

After one quarter, Santa Ynez girls basketball was only down four points to the defending CIF champions.

Post player Analise Riezebos of St. Joseph was in early foul trouble and Santa Ynez’s Annie Fredrickson had three easy baskets.

But, in the second quarter, the Knights’ pressure defense began to get to the Pirates. Those defending champs ran off a 21-6 quarter to build up to a 37-18 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Knights continued to pressure as the Pirates wilted 73-31 in a Los Padres League game.

“I think when you come out against a team like St. Joe you’re already mentally battling a giant,” explained Santa Ynez coach Cheyenne Deitrich. “You come out amped up about the game and are excited about it, so you are going hard.

“Then all of a sudden St. Joe gets up by four points, then by six, and suddenly you think in the back of your head, ‘here it goes.’”

St. Joseph coach Ed Torres praised the Pirates.

“Santa Ynez came out with a lot of energy and I thought they played very well,” he said. “But I was impressed that we didn’t get rattled and were able to put that behind us.”

Fredrickson found herself in foul trouble in the second half and scored eight of her team-high 10 before the break. But Deitrich liked the way she played her position.

“I was really happy with Annie and the way she was moving around the court,” Deitrich said. “She’s really coming into her own and understanding her balance a little better and her spatial awareness on the court.”

The Pirates had trouble getting into an offensive flow, even when they were able to beat the full court St. Joseph press.

“Our passes are too soft, then we start to get hesitant,” Deitrich said. “Sometimes they’re very content with letting someone else do the job.

“You have to step up — you don’t have to play beyond yourself and do something that’s not you, but you have to move and cut to get open.”
