Quinn Cody wins prestigious road race
Quinn Cody, of Los Olivos, teamed up with two other racers to take the title at one of the world’s most well-known desert races.
The trio of Cody, Kendall Norman and Tim Weigand became part of motorsports history with a first-place finish in the overall 2-wheel division at the 42nd Annual Tecate SCORE
Baja 100.
A prestigious off-road race, the Baja 1000 is run in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula annually in the fall. There are no lack of vehicle classes, from motorcycles to stock vehicles to trucks to custom-built racing cars.
The Cody/Norman/Weigand trio rode their Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X motorcycle to the Class 22 title. They defeated a field of 328 starters, which included riders from
39 U.S. states and 14 countries. They charted 672.85 miles of natural terrain, with a tight finish in Ensenada, Mexico.
Cody rode miles 200 to 350, before turning the vehicle over to Weigand who maneuvered it more than 150 miles.
Norman, of Santa Barbara, got the encore, riding the final
169 miles to ensure Honda its 14th consecutive overall win. The final time was 13 hours, 27 minutes and 50 seconds — an average of 49.97 MPH.
Of the 328 starters, a little more than 50 percent actually finished the rugged course, which was often plagued by dusty conditions.
Illes takes third fastest time in school history
Monica Illes made school history with her 19:25 at the CIF Finals held at Mt. SAC on Nov. 21. That time, good for 20th overall, was the third fastest girls’ mark in SYHS history, and bettered her PR by 2 seconds.
Most of the runners at the finals were competing as part of a team. However, Illes competed as an individual. When stacked up against other individuals, Illes took eighth.
