Winter sports under way

SYVN Staff

Santa Ynez’s boys and girls soccer teams were in action Tuesday as the winter sports season got under way. Both are defending Los Padres League champions.

Pirates Emily Ineman and Alisa Silsbee won the Los Padres League doubles championship earlier this fall at the league tennis tournament. They are two key members of Santa Ynez’s girls soccer team.

Today, the Lady Pirates face off against the Arroyo Grande Eagles in an important early-season match. Both teams are defending champs of their leagues. Last season, Arroyo Grande rolled through its PAC-7 League schedule.

Santa Ynez’s boys soccer squad hosted Nipomo on Tuesday, and also faces Arroyo Grande today.

Full previews on both squads are upcoming in the Valley News.

Coach Rob Cantrell’s squad opened its season with a win on the road.

Ineman scored the Pirates’ first goal of the campaign in the ninth minute with an assist from Kaci Mexico.

Mexico scored five minutes later on Silsbee’s assist.

Silsbee scored on a free kick for the last Santa Ynez goal of the first half. Kendall Sauter, and then Silsbee, scored in the second half. Ineman and Mexico had the assists.

Santa Ynez goal keeper Jessica Mauk had to make just two saves.

Pirates defenders Caitlyn Brady, Katarina Rocha and Natalie Yamasaki “all played a tremendous game,” said Cantrell.

The Pirates came up just short in their season opener at Dos Pueblos on Monday.

Hayley King led Santa Ynez with 14 points. Jasmine Mata of Dos Pueblos led all scorers with 23 points. Jessica Escalante added 11 for the Chargers.

“This is a huge improvement from last year,” said Pirates coach Cheyenne Deitrich. “We look like a program that’s fun to watch and fun to coach.”
