Man jumps from Cold Springs Bridge

Rescue crews recovered the body of a man who allegedly jumped from Cold Spring Canyon Bridge on Tuesday.

The man, whose name and age aren’t available, apparently jumped from the bridge about 1:15 p.m. and landed approximately 300 feet below.

Multiple people called California Highway Patrol dispatchers to report a man walking on the bridge. The man told at least one person that he was fine, according to emergency dispatch reports.

This is the seventh person to have committed suicide off the bridge this year, which is believed to be the most for any single year since the structure opened.

Caltrans has proposed installing a suicide-prevention barrier along the sides of the 1,200-foot-long bridge. The project is expected to cost between $2.5 million and $3 million — money that would come from the local portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Dentist will trade cash for candy

As part of an anti-decay movement, Steven Johnson, D.D.S., will be giving away dollars in exchange for cavity-provoking candy this Halloween season.

Johnson said trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to any Johnson Family Dental office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, through Thursday, Nov. 5, and receive $2 per pound for up to 5 pounds

Candy must be unopened, and there is a $30 maximum payout per family.

The candy will then be shipped to U.S. troops overseas, Johnson said.

As an added incentive, a drawing for an iPod 8 GB Nano will be held at each Johnson Family Dental office.

In Solvang, Johnson Family Dental is located at 678 Alamo Pintado, Solvang and can be reached by calling 688-9999.
