SYHS students honored

Three Santa Ynez Valley Union High School seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Alexandra Baker-Brown, Kelly MacDonald and Tyler Shean have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise based on scores from the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) taken in October 2008.

Although they will not continue in competition for National Merit Scholarships, commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the PSAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

New Booster Club raises $12,500

Members of a new academic booster club for Santa Ynez Valley Union High School have raised 10 percent of their goal — $12,500 of $125,000 — toward getting the International Baccalaureate program reinstated for the 2010 school year, club officials said.

The Santa Ynez Valley Academic Booster Club Plus (SYVABC+) was formed after the SYVUHS District Board of Education cut the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in July.

“IB offers SYVUHS students the opportunity to be more competitive when applying to universities. There were 135 students at SYVUHS adversely affected by the cancellation of the IB program. We have accomplished much more than we expected in just one month’s time,” wrote SYVABC+ founders Michelle de Werd and Theo Stephan.

Future fundraising events will soon be posted on the group’s new Web site, www.syvabcplus.com, and all donations will be tax deductible since the club is a nonprofit organization.
