A parade, a pie-baking contest, a 5K walk and run, kids’ activities, food, music in the park, artisan crafts for sale and even a “Zoo to You” presentation of live animals will fill Los Olivos Day in the Country on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The Los Olivos Business Organization (LOBO) will once again host the 29th annual event in the center of Los Olivos, with proceeds supporting town beautification, flagpole and street maintenance and other community events.
“Los Olivos Day in the Country is a truly special event for our town. Families along the Central Coast down into L.A. make plans every year to spend a day together enjoying the best of Los Olivos,” said LOBO president Mark Herthel.
Kicking off the day is a series of 5K runs and a walk sponsored by Platinum Performance for adults and children of all ages. For more information on the walk and runs, call Erika Herthel at 688-1731.
More information about all the activities, as well as registration forms for the runs, parade, pie contest and other events, can be found at www.losolivosca.com.
Anyone who wants to support the Santa Ynez Valley High School Music Boosters can buy a pancake breakfast with orange juice and sausage from 7:30 to 10 a.m. in the Grange Hall with all proceeds going to support the SYVUHS music program.
The food court, which opens at 11 a.m., is another opportunity to support many local nonprofit organizations. The Los Olivos Rotary will once again be serving grilled tri-tip sandwiches.
Artisans will showcase original handcrafted items, from jewelry to clothing to toys to decorative items, with prices for every budget.
Solar power will provide the variety of outdoor electrical needs for the day. REC Solar has donated the use of its portable equipment, and a representative will be on hand to answer questions about solar power.
The annual parade will start down Grand Avenue at 10 a.m. with Joseph and Penny Knowles as this year’s grand marshals. Joseph is a fourth-generation Santa Barbaran and Penny is the executive director of the Wildling Museum in Los Olivos.
Following the grand marshals will be horses, dance troupes, community groups, vintage farm machinery, marching groups, the 4H Club and more.
A perennial favorite, the Apple Pie Contest, will be held at
9 a.m. with the winners announced about 11 a.m., immediately after the parade. Pie bakers of all ages are invited to enter a pie in one of these categories: best traditional double crust, best nontraditional apple pie, best apple tart or best French apple pie.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners and, immediately after the judging, the apple pies will be available for purchase by the slice along with vanilla ice cream and fresh-pressed apple juice. For more information, call Julie Kennedy at 691-1166.
The Agin Brothers Territorial Law Band will kick off the entertainment in Lavinia Campbell park at 11 a.m. and play until about 1:30 p.m., followed by the Gary Foshee Band. Plenty of seating in the park will be available on hay bales provided by Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center.
St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church has changed the dates of its annual Book Faire to coincide with Los Olivos Day in the Country. The Book Faire begins Thursday evening, Oct. 15, with a gala preview including hors d’oeuvres and wine from 5-8:30 p.m. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds support programs in the community and at St. Mark’s.
The Los Olivos PTA will host a variety of games, contests and crafts to engage, inspire and entertain kids of all ages, including the return of the classic Cake Walk. The proceeds will help fund scholarships for class trips such as the annual eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C.
This year, “Scarecrows on Parade” will be handled by Los Olivos School as well. Teachers and the students in their classrooms will make a variety of imaginative and creative scarecrows, and everyone will have a chance to take home one of these special holiday creations.
Those interested in donating supplies or money for the project can call Gary Crispin at Los Olivos School at 688-4025.
The Wildling Art Museum is planning a family day at the museum during the festivities, with families invited to participate in make-and-take art projects from 11 a.m. to noon. At 2 p.m. at the museum, “Zoo to You” will begin with a presentation of live animals native to North America.
More information on the Wildling’s offerings can be found on its Web site, www.wildingmuseum.org.
