3,000 AIDS riders to visit Solvang
By Staff
The Santa Ynez Valley will be included in the route of the multi-day AIDS Lifecycle ride down the California coast when about 3,000 cyclists and volunteers stop for lunch on Thursday, June 4, at the city’s vacant Lot 72 on Alisal Road, near Old Mission Santa Ines.
Solvang officials said there will be no road closures as the string of riders comes in and out of the city between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Arriving from Santa Maria on Ballard Canyon Road on day five of their seven-day ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, the cyclists will leave Solvang after lunch on Highway 246 to Lompoc, where they camp overnight.
The annual AIDS Lifecycle, this year from May 31 to June 6, will complete a 545-mile course to raise awareness and money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center.
Each cyclist is required to raise a minimum of $3,000 and is assigned to a personal cyclist representative for assistance with training, fundraising, emotional and practical support from the moment the cyclist registers until the event is finished.
