A little harder than 1-2-3

Students from the Santa Ynez Valley were among more than 230 northern Santa Barbara County students who participated in the annual Math Superbowl at the Santa Maria Fairpark.
Dubbed “a spelling bee for math,” the bowl gives math-inclined fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from the Santa Ynez, Lompoc and Santa Maria valleys the opportunity to show off their hard-earned calculating skills.
The competition Thursday, May 21, included both written and hands-on challenges, and both team- and individual-based battles.
Oak Valley Elementary School in Buellton took fourth place in overall school performance, first place for the fifth-grade team, fourth place for the fourth-grade team, third place for fourth-grade individual and fourth place for fourth-grade hands-on activity.
Solvang Elementary School took second for fifth-grade team and third and fourth places for fifth-grade individual.
Los Olivos took fourth for sixth-grade individual. Santa Ynez Elementary took third for sixth-grade hands-on activity and fourth for fifth-grade hands-on activity.
Dunn Middle School took fourth place for sixth-grade team.
The North County bowl debuted two years ago as a spin-off from the Santa Barbara County Math Superbowl.
Since its inception 26 years ago, the county bowl had become so popular that students — primarily students from far-flung North County schools — were being turned away in ever-increasing numbers. So, the North County decided to have its own bowl.
