Family School students race to go green

The Family School in Los Olivos held a solar car race between the fourth- and fifth-graders on Thursday, Jan. 15, after they had designed and built their own miniature solar cars.

The students had worked on their solar cars throughout December and January, made from balsa wood, three or four plastic wheels and a solar-powered motor with solar panel.

Lissa Samuel, science teacher at Family School, has hosted for the last two years different solar projects to teach the students about “going green.” Last year’s project was miniature solar boats, and the year before students built a life-size solar-powered greenhouse.

The cars inspired excitement as they were raced across the concrete basketball court toward the finish line.

“From my bird’s-eye view, I really enjoyed watching the races and the enthusiasm that all the students had from the power of the sun,” said Aimee Carroll, mother of student Sara Carroll.
