Santa Ynez’s 25-man football team tried to make a go of it against powerhouse St. Joseph Friday night.
The Pirates just came up short.
The Knights wrapped up their second unbeaten Los Padres League campaign in the last three years by beating the Pirates 49-20 at Santa Ynez. St. Joseph (8-1 overall) finished 7-0 in league games.
Santa Ynez has turned its attention to its season finale which will be at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Santa Maria.
“We’ll try to finish the season strong,” said interim co-head coach Chris Johnson. “St. Joseph is the real deal.”
Regarding his team being so short-handed Friday night, Johnson said, “We have five players out from injuries and some more out because of grades.
“We came out and played hard, just as we do every Friday night. And, again, we shot ourselves in the foot with some penalties.”
A holding penalty short-circuited Santa Ynez’s opening series, which had shown promise with five-yard runs on the first two plays. The holding penalty cancelled the second one.
Santa Ynez sored three times in the second half against St. Joseph’s reserves. Quarterback Tyler Shean threw a 49-yard touchdown strike to Miller Westfall; Casey Eubanks’ five-yard run ended a 99-yard drive; and Westfall scored on a one-yard run.
Shean threw for 184 yards Friday night. Eubanks, with 73 yards on eight carries, was Santa Ynez’s top rusher.
