Local students qualify for National Rodeo Finals

Los Alamos is sending five young cowboys and cowgirls to the National High School Rodeo Finals. This year the finals will be held in Farmington, N.M., from July 20-25.
Representing California High School Rodeo Association District 7 at the California High School Rodeo State Finals in Bishop from June 15-21, the student wranglers had to finish in the top four in their events to qualify for the Nationals.
Lindsey Milner earned a spot in the Nationals by wining the championship in Girls Cutting. Jacob Pinheiro won the Boys Cutting.
Jacob’s brother Jeremy will compete in several events at the Nationals after winning the 2008 CHSRA Champion All-Around Cowboy, Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and Reserve Champion Team Roping Heeler titles.
John Redig won the state’s Reserve Champion Saddle Bronc event. Roy Bilkey won in Reserve Champion Team Roping Header.
Other CHSRA District 7 students competing at the state finals were Samantha Garley, John Redig, Dillon Wingeried, Melissa Fortier, Kaylan McClellan and Shelby Tuck.
Described as the “World’s Largest Rodeo,” the National High School Rodeo Finals feature 1,500 contestants from 41 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, Australia and New Zealand.
