Amgen racers to visit Solvang school

Cycling

Pro-Cyclists Ivan Dominguez and Jose Manuel “Chepe” Garcia of the Toyota United professional cycling team will speak at the Solvang Elementary School Gymnasium on Monday.

The special student assembly runs from 2 to 3 p.m.

More than 200 local children in the fourth through sixth grades will be on hand for the event which is part of the educational curriculum of the Amgen Tour of California (ATOC). The racers will tell the students about their careers in cycling.

The event is coordinated by sixth grade teacher/ cyclist John Padfield who is serving as volunteer Director of Education Outreach for the ATOC Solvang Local Organizing Committee.

The Amgen Tour of California professional cycling 650-mile road race will be held from February 17-24.

CIF rankings

SY girls soccer 10th in CIF poll

The Santa Ynez girls soccer team cracked the CIF Top 10 list, coming in at the No. 10 spot in Division IV while the San Luis Obispo Tigers were voted No. 2 in Division III.

No area boys soccer team were voted into the Top 10.

The Cate School Earwigs, from Los Alamos cracked the Top 10 in Division V-A of boys basketball — coming in at No. 9.

The Righetti Warriors are the No. 8 team in Division II-A in the latest CIF Southern Section boys basketball poll.

The PAC-7 leading Warriors are the only team from their league to crack to Top 15.

Three teams from the Los Padres league are ranked in the Top 15 in Division III-AA of the boys basketball poll.

Morro Bay has the highest ranking at No. 10. The Pirates are followed by the St. Joseph Knights at No. 11 and the Lompoc Braves at No. 15.

St. Joseph has the highest ranked team in the CIF’s girls basketball poll. The Knights are sitting at the No. 4 spot in Division II-A.

Also out of the Los Padres League, Morro Bay stands at No. 10.

Out of the PAC-7 in Division III-AA, the Atascadero Greyhounds girls basketball team is currently ranked No. 11, followed by the Arroyo Grande Eagles at No. 13.

Two local schools cracked the Top 10 in girls water polo.

Arroyo Grande maintains its hold on the No. 2 spot in Division IV behind Harvard Westlake while the Cabrillo Conquistadores sit at No. 5 in the same division.
